I was preparing a "Frozen" birthday party for my 6 year old daughter. Besides paper snowflakes, I'd like to use Elsa, Anna or Olaf in my decoration. I saw a singing/dancing Olaf less than 1 foot tall, priced for $20 or so, at Walmart. I did not buy it. But, I stared it for several minutes, wishing to figure out a way to make Olaf's head with a common house hold item.
You know the saying, "where there is a will, there is a way". I found a perfect object which has the perfect shape for Olaf's head. That is: a gallon size water carton or milk carton.
Material: 2 gallon sized plastic cartons (one for head, one for the lower body)
1 small plastic container for upper body
1 white fleece sheet (8x10 is enough)for teeth and pieces covering the face and body
1 orange fleece sheet for nose
1 or 2 pipe cleaners (for teeth outline and for nose structure)
2 large googly eyes
black construction paper for buttons and eye lining and eye brows
a small piece of dark color fabric as inside of Olaf's mouth
sticks for arms and hair
Steps:
1. Carefully remove stickers from the cartons. (if you can not completely remove it, don't worry too much, just cover it in step 3). For the head carton, cut the handle out (figure 1 and 2).
2. Cut the mouth out. I used a picture in my daughter's story book to guide me through the whole process (figure 3 and 4).
3. To cover the holes from handle cuts, use two snow flakes cut from the white fleece. Also, cut out many small pieces cut from white fleece and glue them randomly around the head.
4. From here, continue work to finish the whole snowman (figure 5 and 6).
